1. KEQI MODERN GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL PROJECT

Tanzanian families are constantly seeking ways to raise their incomes and increase their standards of living. It is believed that raising a Tanzanian student education level by even one year will increase household income. However, education comes at a high price, and with a shortage of schools, sacrifices must be made. In a traditionally patriarchal society, these sacrifices often come at the expense of Tanzania’s girls. According to the World Bank fact sheet (2020), 300,000 children in Tanzania were unable to start secondary education due to lack of space over the past two years. Meanwhile, among enrolled students, 60,000 students drop out of lower secondary school, half of them girls, per year. In this number, 5,500 girls drop out of school due to pregnancy per year.

In Tanzania today, enrollment rates for secondary school are significantly lower than enrollment rates in primary school. World Bank fact sheet (2020) reveals that in 2018 Tanzania’s primary school enrollment reached 10.1 million while the secondary school enrollment was 2.2 million in the same year. Tanzania country report (2018) depicts that for every 100 children who are enrolled in Standard I, only 15 finish the basic education and qualify for further studies and though gender parity is nearly achieved at a primary level, the gap grows significantly at the secondary level of education.

Thus, in our efforts to promote Girls Education in Tanzania and closing this gap; Karagwe Education Quality Improvement (KEQI) is constructing a modern boarding secondary school for girls in Karagwe district. This school will be called KEQI modern girls’ secondary school. Please join us in support of this effort by clicking here to DONATE and enable this project to succeed.
